Fred’s Journey

Verviers Belgium

I was billeted for the night in a house overlooking this church. The mistress of the house gave me her son’s room. He was a slave laborer in Germany. It was a strange feeling, seeing his photographs, favorite books and athletic gear stacked on shelves. Would he ever return?

Artist’s Statement

  • Armelle Le Roux

In this narrative, Fred again captured the awkwardness, at times, of his interactions with French townspeople, and the poignancy of their individual situations. In this childlike composition I try to capture how we as individuals can be swallowed up by circumstances, and manipulated like puppets by outside forces.
