Fred’s Journey

Maastricht Belgium

I have no memory of this church located near the huge military cemetery of Henri-Chapelle. The overseas cemeteries for the war dead have a quiet, solemn grandeur, but to see the raw, earthen graves after hostilities, untended, quickly dug, is sobering and troubling.

Maastricht is not by the ocean, but Fred’s description of war cemeteries inevitably brings to mind the beaches of Normandy and the rows of graves after D-Day. Fred had collected eleven shards in Maastricht, all light-yellow glass. The watercolor-like treatment in this panel is meant to suggest impermanence, as well as the calm after the storm. The shards are lined up as gravestones on the dune—individual markers for specific fallen soldiers, and echoes of an ancient order of standing stones.
