Collégiale Notre Dame de Dinant

Fred’s Journey

Dinant Belgium

This church with its striking cupola is on the east bank of the Meuse River. It had been easily overrun in 1940, but was not quite reached by the Germans in 1944, when I picked up these slivers of glass.

  • Alan Rhodes

Inspired by the snow globe of a souvenir trinket, this piece relates to the past nostalgically. Fred’s memory of Dinant becomes an historical snapshot, a sort of crystal ball revealing different points of view, depending on the observer’s viewpoint, and opening doors to interpretation.
